Dr. Arsalan Baiz

·        Biography

The Kurdistan Parliament President, Dr. Arsalan Baiz, was born in the city of Erbil in 1950.  He completed his education in Erbil and received his BA in Kurdish Language from the University of Baghdad.

·        In 1970 he joined the Kurdish Liberation Movement when he became a member of the League of Marxism-Leninism.

·         In 1974 he joined the Aylul Revolution.

·        His political activities led to his imprisonment in 1975 for three years.  After his release in 1979, he joined the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK).

·        After the success of the Kurdish Uprising in 1991, he took on several posts in the party and media including the chief editor of the Kurdistani Nwe (New Kurdistan) newspaper, which was the first daily newspaper published in Kurdistan in 1992.   He was then elected a member of the PUK leadership committee.

·        From 1993-1996, he became head of the PUK Third Branch Organization in Erbil and then he became head of the PUK organization.  He was appointed as Kurdistan Regional Government Minister of Education.

·        He earned his MA from the University of Sulaimaniya in 2000 and then his Ph.D. in Kurdish Literature in 2003.  Dr. Baiz is the author of many books and publications as well as many political researches.

·        In 2009, he was nominated to be a member of the Kurdistan Parliament-Iraq and was elected the Parliament’s Vice President, which post he held until 2012.  In February 2012, he became the President of the Kurdistan Parliament-Iraq.
